FEEDLOTS

Ensuring smooth transitions and stronger finishes

In the feedlot, success depends on how well cattle adapt. Axiota® offers products that help support rumen health, immune defenses, and consistent growth. Explore nutrition strategies, research, and product details for finishing cattle.

Receiving & step-up

The stress of transportation, co-mingling, and ration changes can disrupt feed intake, weaken immunity, and increase the risk of acidosis — which is exactly what feedlot operators don’t need when trying to efficiently transition cattle to a new environment.

Lactipro® rapidly replenishes Megasphaera elsdenii (Mega e®), a naturally occurring rumen microbe that consumes lactic acid, protecting rumen health, fueling steady gains, and smoothing transitions without setbacks. By shortening the step-up period by up to 50%, Lactipro reduces roughage needs, minimizes feedyard passes, and gets cattle on high-energy feed sooner — improving operational efficiency and giving them a stronger start and supporting a better return on investment.

Transportation can also deplete the trace mineral status in receiving cattle and increase the need for supplementation of critical trace minerals. Stressed animals often have decreased appetites, which can reduce trace mineral intake — particularly in the first 10 days after arrival. Multimin® 90 (zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium injection) supplements essential trace minerals that have been shown to support immune function,1 which is critical during this stressful period — especially since their access to trace minerals prior to arrival is often unknown. Oral trace minerals can take up to 42 days post-arrival to be fully replenished. Multimin 90 increases trace mineral levels within hours to help bridge that gap.

Late feeding period

Cattle value is highest during the late feeding period, and, as a result, death loss during this stage is costly. Factors like stress from processing, inconsistent feed intake, and weather shifts can result in serious and potentially fatal health problems like acidosis and bloat.

Administering Lactipro during and after feed interruption events manages lactic acid buildup and increases butyrate production. This helps protect rumen health and results in fewer late-term death loss events in feedlot cattle due to acidosis and other digestive disturbances. Studies show Lactipro can reduce late-stage mortality — when cattle value is highest and losses are most costly — by 36%. This reduction in late-stage mortality currently results in nearly a 3:1 return on investment.

Hospital cattle

Cattle recovering from stress, illness, or poor feed adaptation need extra support to regain health and return to the feeding program. Multimin 90 supplements trace minerals, which have been shown to support recovery. Trace minerals like those found in Multimin 90 have also been shown to enhance vaccine response, helping cattle better resist disease and maximizing vaccine ROI.1

Healthy rumen and feed intake are also important to recovering cattle. The Mega e found in Lactipro stabilizes rumen function and encourages consistent feed consumption. Lactipro also reduces metabolic disruption when cattle return to the group pen, minimizing further digestive setbacks and keeping cattle on track for growth and performance.

SAFETY

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION FOR MULTIMIN® 90: Not for use in humans, keep out of reach of children. Multimin 90 has a preslaughter withdrawal time of 14 days after injection. Do not use during the first trimester of pregnancy or in pre-ruminant calves as safety has not been established. Selenium and copper are toxic if administered in excess and may lead to sudden death, depression, weakness, ataxia, salivation, and drooling. Do not use concurrently with other selenium or copper injections or boluses. Maximum volume per injection site is 7 mL. Allow a minimum of 30 days before considering repeat dosing. See prescribing information.

FROM OUR CUSTOMERS

"We’ve been using Lactipro for the last five years. From our Lactipro research, what we saw was a significant reduction in the time it takes to get cattle back up on feed following terminal processing."
